Carcassonne
is situated approximately 70 kms north
west of Perpignan (it takes about
one hour to go there starting from
Torreilles) and is the capital of
the department "Aude".
The
city was founded in the 1st century
B.C. by the Romans.
The
fort is one of the rare totally preserved
ones all over Europe. Various
notes and writings prove thad Carcassonne
played an important role in many subjects,
e.g. it was the central administration
of the South French inquisition, the
center of the Cathar movement and
various more.
The
impressive fort with complete twofold
city wall was costly restored in the
19th century and became an UNESCO
World Heritage Site in 1997.
Carcassonne
is worth a whole day-trip. The numerous
alleyways, the cathedral and the round
tour are amazing to explore. For children
Carcassonne is doubtless a memorable
adventure.
